Dhaka: The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested economist Prof Abul Barkat from the Dhanmondi area in the capital on Thursday night. He was taken into custody from his residence on Road No. 3 in Dhanmondi at approximately 11:30 pm.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrest comes as part of a corruption case involving multiple high-profile figures. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed a case on February 20 against 23 individuals. Among those implicated are former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman and former Janata Bank chairman Abul Barkat. The charges are related to the embezzlement of Taka 297 crore.
DB Joint Commissioner (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the arrest, adding a significant development to the ongoing investigation. The case highlights the ACC's continued efforts to address corruption at various levels within the country.
