Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has announced the formation of a high-level committee tasked with overseeing and coordinating activities related to electoral laws, regulations, and the functions of the Electoral Inquiry Committee.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, an office order signed by EC’s Deputy Secretary (Establishment) Md. Shah Alam confirmed the establishment of this committee. The order referenced a notification published in the Bangladesh Gazette on December 5, 2024, which outlined the committee’s responsibilities to manage the formulation, amendment, and modification of electoral laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
The committee is chaired by Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud and includes six other members: the EC’s Senior Secretary, Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary (Legal), Joint Secretary (Election Management-1), Deputy Secretary (Election Operations-2), and Deputy Secretary (Election Support and Supplies). The committee has the flexibility to include additional officials if deemed necessary.
The committee’s primary duties encompass the formulation, amendment, and updating of electoral laws, rules, regulations, and policies. It will also supervise and coordinate the preparation of guidelines and manuals for field administration, law enforcement agencies, returning officers, and polling officials to ensure accurate interpretation and application of the laws. Additionally, the committee will manage and coordinate the activities of the Electoral Inquiry Committee and address other related matters.
