Lalmonirhat: Around 100 landless families of Kashiram village in Tushvendar union under Kaliganj upazila have successfully reclaimed their land after a prolonged period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) facilitated the recovery of approximately 7 acres of government-allotted land designated for these families. The retrieval operation took place on Wednesday afternoon, with Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Zakia Sultana overseeing the process. The land was formally handed back to the rightful families during her presence.
In 2000, these landless families were initially rehabilitated with the construction of barracks on about 15 acres in Kashiram village. However, due to river erosion in 2003-04, the barracks vanished into the riverbed. As new chars formed in the area, 6.66 acres were reclaimed, and the families were resettled on this land.
Despite the emergence of new land, the families could not reclaim their rightful property due to illegal occupation. With assistance from Kaliganj police and the Army, 6.66 acres were recovered, allowing the landless individuals, previously allotted land through a 5 percent land acquisition, to regain their holdings, as confirmed by Zakia Sultana.
The recovery of the land has provided the landless families with the opportunity to rebuild their homes, offering them stability and renewed hope.
