Yangon: Bangladesh women's football team is on the verge of making history as they defeated Myanmar 2-1 in their second group match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon. With this victory, Bangladesh leads Group C with two consecutive wins, edging closer to becoming group champions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, if Bangladesh secures a win against the lowest-ranked Turkmenistan in their final group match, they will make history by advancing to the final round of the AFC Asian Cup for the first time. This achievement would place Bangladesh in Asia's premier women's football competition, joining the eight group winners of the Women's Asian Cup qualifiers in next year's final round in Australia.
The decisive match against Turkmenistan is scheduled for Saturday at the same venue. Bangladesh's performance in the current qualifiers marks a significant improvement, as they had lost all five matches in the previous two Asian Cup qualifiers. Now, with two consecutive victories, they are ahead in the race to secure a ticket to the Asian Cup final round.
Forward Ritu Porna Chakma, who played a crucial role in Bangladesh's triumph, scored twice during the match. Substitute midfielder Win Win netted a lone goal for Myanmar. The breakthrough for Bangladesh came in the 18th minute from a free kick, with Ritu securing a lead through a powerful angular shot. Despite Myanmar's attempts to fight back, Ritu extended Bangladesh's lead in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot, making it 2-0.
While Bangladesh could not further extend their lead, Myanmar managed to reduce the deficit with a goal from substitute midfielder Win Win in the 89th minute, concluding the match at 2-1.
