Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin expressed confidence today that the Election Commission (EC) can conduct free and fair elections with the support of the people. Speaking to journalists at the Election Building in Agargaon, he emphasized the role of public cooperation in ensuring transparent electoral processes.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CEC mentioned that the announcement of the election date and schedule will be made in due course by the EC. He assured the public that preparations for the elections are underway, following a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, who showed a strong commitment to democratic power transfer.
The CEC highlighted the mutual sincerity between the Election Commission and the Chief Adviser in achieving an election that is fair, acceptable, and neutral. He reiterated the focus on national elections, stating that any considerations for local government elections would require a review of the voter list.
Addressing questions from journalists, Nasir Uddin clarified that the current focus is on national elections, with preparations considering potential dates in February and April. He dispelled rumors about his health and resignation, emphasizing that his recent illness was unrelated to his duties.
The CEC also stressed the neutrality of both himself and the Chief Adviser, describing his recent meeting with Yunus as a courtesy visit without any formal agenda. He assured that the commission is working diligently to ensure readiness for the elections despite challenges.
In response to inquiries about possible restructuring of the Election Commission, the CEC denied receiving any such indications, underscoring the Commission's commitment to impartiality. He declined to comment on legal matters related to the arrest of former Chief Election Commissioners, as those cases are still under judicial consideration.
