Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) emphasized the urgent need for developing innovative strategies to effectively tackle the proliferation of new synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs, known as New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), during a discussion meeting organized by the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at the Osmani Smrity Auditorium, commemorating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser highlighted the necessity of strategic surveillance and legal measures to address the challenges posed by these emerging narcotics. He stressed the commitment of the interim Government to safeguard the nation from the detrimental impact of drug abuse, acknowledging the limitations faced by the Narcotics Control Department in terms of manpower while emphasizing their ongoing efforts to eliminate drug-related issues.

Jahangir underscored the multidimensional nature of drug abuse and illegal trafficking, stating that a comprehensive approach involving all sectors of society is essential. He called for stronger anti-drug campaigns to reduce demand and urged the participation of government bodies, non-governmental organizations, educators, religious leaders, parents, and civil society in combating this pervasive issue.

The meeting also featured speeches by Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Md. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Senior Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani, and Director General of DNC Md Hasan Maruf. In his address, Jahangir described drug addiction as a global crisis threatening public health, law and order, and economic stability. He pointed out the adverse effects of drugs on the country’s development, particularly concerning the youth, who are crucial to the nation’s progress.

Jahangir highlighted the need to foster an educated and technologically skilled youth population to drive national development, referencing the historical role of youth in resisting social injustices. He expressed concern over the increasing involvement of different societal groups, including women and children, in drug-related activities, urging collaborative efforts with relevant ministries to address these issues.

Furthermore, Jahangir mentioned ongoing awareness initiatives, such as forming anti-drug committees in educational institutions and organizing debates and seminars. He noted that comprehensive action plans are being implemented at district and upazila levels to combat drug abuse effectively.
