Dhaka: The UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture will be observed in Bangladesh, alongside other countries, tomorrow. On this occasion, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message emphasizing the country’s commitment to human rights.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus stated that the Government of Bangladesh stands with the international community in recognizing the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. He highlighted that torture is a violation of human rights and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Professor Yunus acknowledged the courage and resilience of torture survivors in Bangladesh and globally. He criticized the use of torture and ill-treatment for repression during Sheikh Hasina’s rule from 2009 to 2024, which targeted political opponents and dissenters, undermining the rule of law and society.
The Interim Government, Professor Yunus noted, is committed to ending this culture of abuse. The government’s mandate focuses on prosecuting past abusers, implementing reforms, and conducting elections to ensure security and dignity for all citizens.
He detailed steps taken since taking office, including signing the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances. This signifies a commitment to preventing enforced disappearances and addressing past abuses.
The Commission of Inquiry of Enforced Disappearances has been established to investigate allegations of torture and detention from past political unrest. This body aims for transparency and accountability, providing redress for victims.
Professor Yunus also mentioned reforms in police and judicial administrations, including human rights training for law enforcement and strengthened judicial oversight of detention procedures.
He concluded by expressing solidarity with victims of torture, committing to justice, and vowing to prevent future violations. He called for this day to be a turning point for Bangladesh and other nations in reclaiming moral governance.
