Gaibandha: World Environment Day 2025 was observed in Gaibandha today, focusing on the urgent need to combat environmental degradation, with a particular emphasis on addressing plastic pollution.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the SKS Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in Gaibandha, organized a series of events under its School-Led Community Resilience to Disaster and Climate Risk project to commemorate the day. The theme for this year was “Ending plastic pollution.”
The celebrations commenced at 10 am with a grand rally from Belka MC High School in Sundarganj upazila’s Belka Union. The rally wound through Belka Bazaar before returning to the school premises.
Following the rally, a discussion meeting took place in the school’s hall room, presided over by Head Teacher Ahsan Habib Khokon. Among the speakers were Ibrahim Khalilullah, Chairman of Belka Union Parishad, and several local volunteers.
Project Manager Afroja Bulbul presented the welcome speech, providing an overview of the project’s initiatives across three disaster-prone unions in the upazila: Belka, Kapasia, and Horipur. She highlighted that 10 high schools in these areas have received intervention, with several previously unusable school buildings now repaired and functional.
The discussion’s speakers stressed the critical importance of environmental protection, particularly emphasizing the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
As part of the day’s initiatives, fruit-bearing tree saplings were planted on the school premises. A large cohort of students, teachers, local dignitaries, social workers, journalists, and invited guests actively participated in the events.
