Rangpur: Reducing environmental pollution is vital for maintaining a habitable planet, emphasized officials and experts at a post-rally discussion held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room on Wednesday. The district administration and Department of Environment collaboratively organized the event, along with a colorful rally, drawing competition, and prize distribution, to mark World Environment Day 2025.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the discussion featured Rangpur Divisional Director (Local Government) Md Abu Zafar as the chief guest. The function, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Pirmal Kumar Sarkar, also included speeches from Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Rangpur Range DIG Office M Ashraf Ullah Taher, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Limon Roy, and Additional SP Sharif Mohammad Farukuzzaman.
The chief guest highlighted the growing uninhabitability of the planet due to indiscriminate tree cutting and environmental pollution. He pointed out that polythene is a significant contributor to pollution, as it neither decomposes in water nor soil and releases toxic gases when burned. The widespread use of plastic is leading to increased microplastic presence, which is linked to various health issues and environmental degradation. He advocated for the increased use of environmentally friendly jute products as an alternative to plastic.
Discussing brick kilns, he noted their detrimental impact on the environment and called for the adoption of modern technology, alternative fuel sources, and sustainable brick production methods. He emphasized that controlling environmental pollution extends beyond law enforcement and requires heightened public awareness. He urged all stakeholders to actively contribute to maintaining an unpolluted environment.
The event concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners of various children’s and students’ competitions held in celebration of the day.
