Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that the government is prioritizing the arrest of ring leaders involved in drug trading as part of its strategy to combat the drug menace in the country. Jahangir emphasized that focusing on the godfathers of drug trafficking holds more significance than apprehending the drug carriers. He shared these insights while distributing cheques of donations among private drug rehabilitation centers today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 2025, which will be observed tomorrow globally. Addressing concerns about the involvement of some law enforcement members in drug trafficking, Jahangir assured that legal actions would be taken against any individuals found involved in such activities. He mentioned that a high-ranking official has already been removed from duty due to suspected connections to drug trafficking and will soon face justice.
The adviser also disclosed plans for the government to construct drug rehabilitation centers across seven divisions at an estimated cost of Taka 1,400 crore. He expressed gratitude to private drug rehabilitation centers for their efforts in helping drug addicts reintegrate into society and urged them to enhance their initiatives.
Jahangir highlighted the issue of contraband drugs such as Phensedyl syrup and Yaba tablets being smuggled into Bangladesh from neighboring countries India and Myanmar. He mentioned that the government has requested these countries to dismantle their drug factories, and discussions have been initiated with the relevant authorities to take necessary measures for their closure.
