Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) has granted the prosecution an additional month to submit the investigation report concerning the case of Abu Sayed's killing in Rangpur during the July-August mass uprising. This decision was made by the three-judge panel of ICT-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, who accepted the prosecution's plea for more time.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal also permitted the investigation agency to interrogate the accused individuals. Former sub-inspector of police Amir Hossain and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy will be questioned on June 18. Former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam and Imran Chowdhury Akash, the general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's varsity wing, are set for interrogation on June 19.
Prosecutor SM Mainul Karim, while requesting the extension, explained that the investigation is nearing completion and only procedural matters remain. Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam was present during the hearing, where the accused individuals were produced by the prison authorities.
The tribunal had previously shown the four accused as arrested in the case on April 9. According to the prosecution, the events leading to Abu Sayed's death on July 16, 2024, involved an attack by then proctor Shariful and members of the BCL on university students, followed by the fatal shooting of Abu Sayed by two policemen. The family of Abu Sayed filed a complaint against 25 individuals on January 13, seeking justice for his killing.
