Dhaka: Distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya today highlighted the successes of the interim government in areas such as the external sector, remittance, exports, debt repayment, reserve boosting, and maintaining a stable exchange rate.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Debapriya emphasized that the pressure of repaying foreign loans from the previous regime posed a significant risk to the country. He noted the government's achievement in reducing this burden by repaying $5 billion, thus stabilizing the financial outlook.

He made these remarks at a shadow parliament event focused on the forthcoming budget for the fiscal year 2026, titled "Enhancing revenue collection should be the main goal in the ensuing budget," organized by the Debate for Democracy. Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, the chairman of Debate for Democracy, presided over the session.

Dr Debapriya suggested that incorporating confiscated assets from corrupt individuals, money launderers, and tax evaders into the budget could offer a substantial financing source. He also stressed the importance of addressing non-performing loans, recovering siphoned funds, expanding the tax net, establishing a fair tax structure, and restoring stability in the private sector and investment.

During the debate session, participants from the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology emerged victorious, defeating the team from Ananda Mohan College of Mymensingh.
