Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to be upgraded into a separate and specialized division within the Ministry of Finance. This move aims to strengthen the NBR and transform it into a special entity.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a press release from the Ministry of Finance stated that the restructuring will be carried out while keeping the interests of the BCS (tax) and BCS (customs and VAT) cadres in mind. This will involve discussions with the NBR, Advisory Committee members on NBR reforms, and other important stakeholders.
The release also mentioned that necessary amendments to the ‘Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance 2025’ will be implemented by July 31, 2025. Until these amendments are made, the ordinance will not take effect.
The press release was issued to clarify a previous note from the Ministry of Finance dated May 22, 2025, following concerns from the NBR Songskar Oikya Parishad. The government expressed hope that this development will address the concerns of income tax, customs, and VAT department officials and employees, and that countywide offices related to revenue collection and services will operate with renewed enthusiasm.
