Kurigram: The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula-2025 was observed in Kurigram with a focus on identifying and providing free treatment to obstetric fistula patients as part of efforts to eliminate the disease in the country. LAMB Hospital, in partnership with the UNFPA-assisted Elimination of Genital Fistula by Capturing, Treating, Rehabilitating, and Reintegrating in Bangladesh (FRRei) project, organized several programs in collaboration with the Kurigram Civil Surgeon’s Office to mark the day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Bangladesh and Global Affairs of Canada offered technical support for the day’s events, which carried the theme ‘Let’s Ensure the Health Rights of Women with Fistulas, Build a Country Free of Obstetric Fistula’. The observance began with Kurigram Civil Surgeon Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas inaugurating a photo exhibition on the obstetric fistula program, acting as the chief guest.
A colorful rally followed, featuring doctors, nurses, and midwives, which commenced from the Kurigram General Hospital premises. The rally traversed the main roads of the district town before concluding at the Civil Surgeon’s Office premises. The program further included discussions led by Program Analyst of UNFPA Bangladesh Md Shamsuzzaman, Reproductive Health Services Coordinator of Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO) Dr. Sumashree Roy, and LAMB project manager Mahatab Liton.
Mahatab Liton addressed the causes of obstetric fistula, highlighting the ongoing efforts to provide cost-free treatment and rehabilitation for patients. He mentioned that a month-long campaign is in progress to identify fistula patients, who will receive medical services at no charge upon identification. He also spoke about the role of LAMB Hospital and other government health facilities in identifying and referring patients for treatment.
Dr. Sumashree Roy provided insights into the causes of obstetric fistula and the no-cost treatment options available in the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions. The Civil Surgeon underscored the importance of raising social awareness to prevent child marriage and pregnancy, ensure safe institutional deliveries, and promote quality surgical practices to eradicate obstetric fistula in the country.
