Dhaka: Speakers at a function in Dhaka emphasized the importance of early preparations in mitigating the adverse effects of floods on lives and properties in flood-prone areas. They highlighted that proactive measures could significantly reduce the damage during flood events and their aftermath.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the district's geographical location makes it susceptible to seasonal floods, which annually bring about significant challenges for residents. The floods impact various sectors, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, communication, and education, causing widespread distress.
The speakers stressed that early preparations could alleviate the hardships faced by the affected communities and substantially decrease the loss of lives and damage to properties. These remarks were made during a discussion meeting on the "Simulation on the National Early Action Protocol on Monsoon Riverine Flood," held at NH Modern High School.
The event was organized by the Department of Disaster Management and Relief under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, in collaboration with several organizations, including the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, CARE Bangladesh, Concern Worldwide, FAO, FRIENDSHIP, IFRC, RIMES, Save the Children, SKS Foundation, Start Network, and World Food Program.
KM Abdul Wadud, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, served as the chief guest, with Razwanur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Disaster Management, presiding over the function. Other notable speakers included Md. Rabiul Islam, Additional Secretary (Relief) of the Ministry, Siddiqul Islam Khan from WFP, Emebet Menna from CARE, Khorshed Alam Sarker from the Department of Agricultural Extension, and Shafiqul Islam, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer.
The event also featured a mock drill conducted on the school grounds, with active participation from volunteers of various organizations. The drill aimed to raise awareness among the public about the importance of early flood preparations to mitigate potential losses during such natural disasters.
