Dhaka: Stine Renate Haheim, State Secretary for International Development of the Government of Norway, today called on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna here, reaffirming Norway's continued support for Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, the Norwegian State Secretary conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and highlighted Norway's longstanding relationship with Bangladesh. She acknowledged the admiration Norway holds for Prof Yunus, emphasizing the close ties between the two nations.
Prof Yunus reflected on the deep and historic ties between Bangladesh and Norway, expressing gratitude for Norway's support during critical moments in Bangladesh's development journey. Haheim emphasized Norway's commitment to multilateral cooperation and democratic transitions, highlighting the importance of supporting Bangladesh's democratization process.
Prof Yunus discussed recent challenges faced by Bangladesh, including the aftermath of the July uprising, economic damage, and issues of financial mismanagement by previous regimes. Despite these challenges, he noted growing global confidence in Bangladesh, evidenced by the attendance of international companies at the recent BIDA Summit.
The Chief Adviser also urged Norway to continue its support for Bangladesh, particularly concerning the forcibly displaced Rohingya population. Prof Yunus highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the aspirations of the young Rohingya community, emphasizing the need for hope and support.
Haheim acknowledged the humanitarian challenges faced by Bangladesh and reiterated Norway's commitment to expanding the bilateral relationship beyond development assistance toward a broader partnership. She expressed appreciation for Bangladesh's leadership in addressing the Rohingya crisis and emphasized the importance of a dynamic partnership between the two countries.
