Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has taken the significant step of suspending the registration of the Bangladesh Awami League. This development was confirmed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed following a meeting of the commission.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the decision is a direct consequence of a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. "The Ministry of Home Affairs has banned the activities of Awami League and all its front, associate, and brotherly organizations. In continuation of this, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the registration of Awami League," stated Ahmed.
The Home Ministry issued a gazette today, formalizing the ban on all activities associated with the party. The EC's decision follows this directive, highlighting the broader governmental measures currently impacting the political landscape in Bangladesh.
The meeting that led to this decision was convened at around 5:30 pm, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. This decisive action marks a pivotal moment in the country's political scene, with potential ramifications for the upcoming electoral processes.
