Dhaka: Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation (BKF) General Secretary SM Newaz Shohag has lauded the recent initiative by the interim government to organize the nation's first Festival of Youth as a timely decision crucial for the advancement of sports in the country. Shohag emphasized the importance of the festival in promoting sports development while speaking to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shohag expressed his belief that the continuation of the Festival of Youth would facilitate the federation's operations, allowing for a more organized and timely talent hunt program. He noted that the federation's year-round activities often hinder their ability to launch such initiatives independently, highlighting the need for ongoing governmental support and cooperation.
During the Festival of Youth held in January, the BKF conducted a nationwide kabaddi competition, culminating in the selection of fifty boys and fifty girls for advanced training. Shohag revealed that these hundred young athletes have already been selected and are set to receive training from both foreign and local coaches starting this month.
Shohag stressed the significance of the talent hunt process for all sports federations, particularly for kabaddi. He suggested that establishing a fixed annual schedule for the Festival of Youth would enable federations to conduct the talent selection process smoothly and without disruption. The selected athletes are expected to strengthen the national team in the future, thereby enriching the national sports pipeline.
Addressing a question regarding financial constraints, Shohag acknowledged that many sports federations face budgetary limitations, which impede their ability to maintain year-round sports activities. He asserted that government support is essential for conducting proper training and called on the government to focus more attention on this issue.
