Govt Plans Separate Bank for Livestock Farmers: Farida

Savar: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today announced that the interim government has a plan to establish a dedicated bank for livestock farmers. This initiative aims to provide livestock keepers with the same facilities as farmers, recognizing the interconnectedness of agriculture and livestock sectors.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adviser Farida Akhter emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to offer low-interest loans to farmers. Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on “Strengthening Partnership for Innovation in Livestock Research and Development” at the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) in Savar, she highlighted the importance of creating financial opportunities for livestock farmers.



Farida Akhter praised the BLRI’s efforts in promoting Napier grass for a sustainable grass-based food management system for cows but noted that current grass production is insufficient. She stressed the need for strategic planning to enhance grass production.



The adviser reiterated the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock’s commitment to ensuring a stable supply of essential meat products, emphasizing the crucial role of farmers in achieving this goal. She also called for a shift in perception, urging that agricultural and livestock farming be regarded as a dignified profession.



Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Farida Akhter called for increased cooperation between BLRI and the Department of Livestock. She noted the strength of both organizations in terms of skilled scientists and officers, advocating for a unified approach to research and development.



The seminar was chaired by BLRI Director General Dr. Shakila Faruque, with Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock, as the special guest. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Cameron Clarke of Charles Sturt University, Australia, while Dr. ABM Mustanur Rahman, Additional Director of the Institute, provided the welcome address.
