Dhaka: National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz emphasized the significance of collective unity among the people, along with efforts from political and democratic forces, as key to building a new Bangladesh. He remarked that reports, opinions, or recommendations from reform commissions are not enough to achieve this goal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Ali Riaz made these comments during a discussion at the commission's meeting with Gono Odhikar Parishad at the LD Hall of the Parliament Building. Commission members including Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider were in attendance.
Expressing optimism about establishing a democratic state through dialogue with political parties, Ali Riaz stated, "The democratic aspirations of the people of Bangladesh that have been nurtured for the past 53 years now must be brought for implementation." He further emphasized the need for genuine commitments and promises to the people, beyond written words.
The goal of the National Consensus Commission, as articulated by Ali Riaz, is to create a national charter to transform the power structure of the country and advance Bangladesh's potential. The meeting included a 10-member delegation led by Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nuru, and other key representatives.
In the initial phase, several reform commissions including the Constitutional Reform Commission, Public Administration Reform Commission, Electoral Reform Commission, Judiciary Reform Commission, and Anti-Corruption Commission have submitted their recommendations. These recommendations have been shared with 39 political parties for their specific opinions.
The National Consensus Commission has received feedback from 35 parties regarding the reforms and has engaged in discussions with 20 political parties to date.
