Dhaka: The Labour Reform Commission has put forward a significant recommendation to implement universal maternity leave, advocating for a minimum of six months of paid leave for women workers. This recommendation was officially presented to Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commission emphasized the importance of maternity protection and has suggested establishing a comprehensive framework for maternity welfare. This framework is intended to support employers through the Workers’ Welfare Foundation, central fund, and other social assistance mechanisms, benefiting employees across both formal and informal sectors, as well as in small and cottage industries, and among self-employed workers.

The report further proposes aligning the duration of paternity leave with international standards, enhancing parental support for families. Additionally, the commission’s recommendations highlight the need for flexible working conditions and supportive measures for women during pregnancy and postpartum. This includes options for an additional two-year unpaid leave, exemption from overtime, flexible work schedules, and opportunities for rest during work periods.

The Labour Reform Commission, led by Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, executive director of the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies, was established by the government on November 17, 2024, to address and reform labor policies in the country.
