Dhaka: The Labour Reform Commission (LRC) has put forward a recommendation for the establishment of a permanent labour commission as a statutory body, aiming to ensure a responsible labour administration system. This proposal was presented in a report handed over to Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the report highlights the necessity of forming a permanent labour commission to foster a responsible labour administration system. As an initial measure, it proposed that the labour ministry should immediately establish a ‘National Social Dialogue Forum’.

The report also addressed the need for new employment opportunities and skill development. It urged the government to take significant steps to mitigate the country’s unemployment issue and to broaden employment prospects both domestically and internationally.

Facing the challenges posed by automation and the fourth industrial revolution, the commission suggested that the government devise a short, medium, and long-term roadmap to develop a skilled workforce. Additionally, the report stressed the importance of cultivating a productive youth labor force and fostering entrepreneurship.

On the topic of social security for workers, the commission called on the government to implement measures to ensure universal social security for all laborers.

The interim government established the 10-member labour reform commission on November 17. This commission is led by Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), with the aim of undertaking proper reforms in the sector.
