Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul today stated that the process through which model Meghna Alam was detained under the Special Powers Act was not correct. “Police are conducting the probe in this connection and the Ministry of Home Affairs will take appropriate action very soon,” he mentioned while speaking to newsmen during a press briefing at the secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the law adviser highlighted that the detention of the model has sparked significant controversy, prompting a high-level government meeting to address the situation. He acknowledged the widespread statements from both individuals and rights bodies regarding the matter.
In a related development, the High Court (HC) has issued a rule demanding that the relevant authorities provide an explanation within two weeks as to why Meghna Alam’s 30-day detention under the Special Powers Act should not be deemed beyond legal jurisdiction. The order was passed by a High Court division bench comprising Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Tamanna Rahman Khalidi after a hearing on a writ petition filed in connection with the case.
The writ was filed by Meghna’s father, and Barrister Sara Hossain represented the plea before the court. Model Meghna Alam, who gained recognition as the winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, was apprehended from her residence in the Basundhara Residential Area on April 9. A Dhaka court had earlier ordered her 30-day detention under the Special Powers Act on April 8.
