Dhaka: A fire, suspected to be an act of anarchists, engulfed the face motif of Sheikh Hasina, which was erected as a symbol of fascism for the Noboborsho Shobhajatra event, set for Pahela Boishakh on April 14.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the fire completely incinerated the motif of Sheikh Hasina, one of the seven major motifs prepared for the Bangla New Year celebration, and also caused damage to nearby structures.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed indicated that the fire might have been set between 4:45 and 5:00 in the morning when security personnel went to perform Fajr prayers. “The act of setting fire might be done at that time,” he stated.
The dean of the Fine Arts Faculty at Dhaka University released a notification stating, “On 12th April, around 04:50 AM, someone or some people set fire to the symbolic motif of the monstrous fascist among the various symbolic motifs kept inside the pandal erected near the southern gate of the faculty.”
In response to the incident, the university authorities have decided to establish a probe committee to investigate the cause of the fire. Additionally, a general diary has been filed with Shahbag police station.
