Dhaka: In a coordinated drive, joint forces evicted 70 illegal shops clearing footpaths in the capital's Airport Roundabout area yesterday. The operation aimed to address traffic congestion and curb criminal activities such as pickpocketing and robbery in the busy locality.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the drive was led by Special Judicial Magistrate Md Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The operation included personnel from the Uttara Division Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the Army, showcasing a collaborative effort to enforce law and order in the area.
Uttara Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Md Mohidul Islam explained that the initiative was necessary to maintain the smooth flow of traffic and ensure public safety. He emphasized that there is no provision for establishing shops on both sides of the highway, and any attempt to set up illegal structures will be met with immediate legal action.
The authorities initially employed persuasion tactics to encourage shopkeepers to vacate the premises voluntarily. As a result, no arrests or fines were imposed during this drive, reflecting a focus on compliance and cooperation from the local vendors.
