Rajshahi: One of the accused in the killing case of Saquib Anjum, who was killed during the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement on August 5, 2024, has been arrested from the Bosepara area in the city last night. Police reported that the arrestee has been identified as Nayan Islam, 32, son of late Abdul Mannan of Bosepara area under Boalia Model Police Station in the metropolis.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at his residence and arrested him. Saquib Anjum, 27, left his house in Talaimary area on August 5 with the hope of returning with a message of ending the 16-year-long regime. However, he was shot dead during the student-led mass uprising.

Saquib Anjum, who had recently completed his post-graduation in Computer Science and Engineering at Varendra University, had been an active voice against injustice from a young age. He participated in the anti-quota student movement in 2018 and joined the anti-discrimination student movement this year.

On October 16, Anjum’s body was exhumed after 72 days of burial following a court directive, as it had been buried without post-mortem due to a lack of medical personnel and police presence immediately after the mass uprising on August 5, 2024. Investigation Officer Moshiar Rahman stated that Mainul Haque, the father of the deceased, lodged a case with Boalia Model Police Station against 342 people, including former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and city unit General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Dablu Sarker.

He also mentioned that some accused in the case, including Dablu Sarker and Juba League leader Jahirul Islam Rubel, had been arrested earlier.
