Kurigram: Women in the Kurigram district are finding self-reliance through flower cultivation on the sandy char lands, which has emerged as a lucrative business with higher profits compared to other agricultural crops.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, flower farming is gaining popularity in Bangladesh due to its potential to provide employment, alleviate poverty, and enhance the environment. The traditional view that flower farming is predominantly male-centric is changing, as more women are engaging in this economically promising activity.

Experts believe that integrating women farmers into the mainstream agricultural sector could significantly empower women, provided there is practical support to facilitate their efforts. Many stakeholders, from policymakers to grassroots activists, recognize the transformative role flower farming can play in women’s empowerment.

Sajia Khanam, a resident of the Sadar upazila in Kurigram district, exemplifies this trend. Married to Rahim Mia, an entrepreneur who faced business losses, Sajia sought ways to contribute to her family’s income. With limited financial resources, she turned to flower cultivation on her land, following advice from a neighbor. Her initial success has encouraged her to expand her flower garden, which includes marigold, gladiolus, and rose varieties.

Sajia’s venture has been profitable, with flower sales generating significant income. Her husband supports her efforts by assisting with farming and sales. Despite challenges, such as reduced production during floods, Sajia’s determination has inspired other women in the area to pursue flower farming as a viable economic activity.

Local flower businesses have also benefited, as they no longer rely solely on supplies from Jashore to meet the demand in Kurigram. This shift began in 2018 and continues to grow, with more women participating in flower cultivation and contributing to their families’ financial stability. Farmer Khodeja highlights the potential of flower farming in the district, noting the benefits it brings to both mainland and char areas in Kurigram.
