LGED Engineer Jailed for Five Years in Khulna

Khulna: A Khulna Court today sentenced S M Habibullah, a sub-assistant engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) of Koyra upazila, to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Md Ashraful Islam, Judge of the Khulna Divisional Special Judge Court, pronounced the verdict in presence of the accused, Md Yasin Ali, Bench assistant of the court confirmed.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Judge also fined the engineer Taka 5,000. In default, he will have to serve an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment. The prosecution stated that S M Habibullah, son of Borhan Uddin from Borobaria village under Chitolmari upazila in Bagerhat, was caught red-handed by the ACC while taking a bribe of Taka one lakh from Zahangir, a contractor, on April 16, 2014.



Abul Hashem, deputy-assistant director of ACC of Khulna, filed a case against engineer Habibullah on the same day with Koyra Police Station. On August 31, 2015, S M Shamim Iqbal, deputy-assistant director of ACC, pressed charges against Habibullah in the court.
