Chittagong: BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized that a free, fair, and credible national election is the sole avenue to restoring democratic order in the country, thereby reinstating the people's ownership over the state. Speaking as the chief guest at a media exchange and Iftar Mahfil event, he alleged that certain factions are attempting to obstruct the democratic transition by delaying or hindering the electoral process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amir Khasru stated that any alternative to holding elections as a means to establish a democratic new Bangladesh contradicts the spirit of the July uprising and undermines the sacrifices made in the struggle against fascist rule. The event, organized by the BNP city unit at Ladies Club in Chittagong, was chaired by Unit Convener Alhaj Ershad Ullah and moderated by unit Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman. Attendees included City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossen and BNP leaders Abul Hashem Bakkar and Alhaj Shamsul Alam.
Amir Khasru criticized the deprivation of legitimate rights, including voting rights, during the previous regime and noted that a quarter is attempting to infringe upon fundamental rights akin to a fascist regime. He called for a clear roadmap for national elections to fulfill the aspirations of the people and restore constitutional governance with a mandate from the populace.
Addressing allegations that the BNP is attempting to rehabilitate the Awami League politically, Amir Khasru dismissed these claims as baseless propaganda aimed at undermining BNP's popularity. He asserted that while the BNP believes in a tolerant and peaceful society, it does not imply that those responsible for past repressions, corruption, and human rights violations will be exempt from accountability.
Amir Khasru also mentioned that certain vested interests are waging a propaganda war against the BNP to tarnish its image and diminish its contributions to democracy over the past 15 years. He highlighted that the BNP has taken disciplinary actions against over 2,000 workers and leaders involved in unlawful activities, setting an example of accountability within the party.
