Dhaka: A court here today imposed a travel ban on Awami League presidium member and former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and his wife Pervin Chowdhury over graft allegations. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order, allowing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ACC in its plea stated that the former minister has allegedly amassed substantial illegal wealth in his and his family members’ names. The wealth was reportedly obtained by taking commissions from local contractors, selling party posts and nominations, embezzling government funds, and laundering the money abroad.
The commission has already formed a three-member committee to investigate the allegations. During its primary investigation, the committee found that Maya and his wife are attempting to flee the country to evade justice. As a result, the ACC argued that a travel ban should be imposed on them.
