Dhaka: BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque today criticized the interim government for not taking action against bureaucrats who supported the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina. He expressed these views during a sit-in protest held in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding accountability for election-related misconduct.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farroque highlighted that the interim government, led by Dr. Yunus, has failed to address the misconduct of bureaucrats aligned with Sheikh Hasina’s administration. He accused these officials, some of whom are closely associated with the Chief Adviser, of engaging in corrupt activities during Hasina’s tenure. Despite these allegations, no punitive measures have been taken against them.
The senior BNP leader further criticized the role of police officials Harun-or-Rashid and Mehedi Hasan, accusing them of arresting and torturing numerous BNP leaders and activists under the guise of remand. He alleged that these actions facilitated Hasina in conducting three illegal elections.
Farroque called for immediate justice against those responsible for the alleged electoral misconduct, warning that without accountability, state reforms would be ineffective. He also urged Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), to gauge their popularity by engaging with communities across the country.
Emphasizing a unified effort to protect democracy and freedom, Farroque expressed hope that BNP and NCP would reach a consensus regarding the forthcoming parliamentary elections, despite potential differences in opinion.
