Chattogram: A Chattogram court today sentenced a youth to life term imprisonment for killing a construction worker in the city 15 years ago. The court of first Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman pronounced the verdict and fined the convicted construction worker Nazrul Islam Tk 50,000. In default, he will face an additional year in jail.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, court sources revealed that construction workers supplier Monju Mia was beaten to death with various heavy construction materials, including a shovel, by the convicted Nazrul on the night of April 24, 2010. This incident took place while working on a construction site belonging to one Arifur Rahman in Chandranagar area of Bayezid Bostami police station.
Nazrul was also employed by Arifur Rahman on the same plot, leading to a dispute between the two. This conflict ultimately resulted in Manju’s murder. Locals rushed him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries there.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife filed a murder case with Biyazid thana, accusing another contractor Nazrul and his accomplice Shahab Uddin of the killing. The police conducted an investigation and submitted a charge sheet before the court on September 15, 2010, accusing them.
The court pronounced the verdict today after examining 11 prosecution witnesses out of 14, convicting Nazrul in his absence. Meanwhile, the court acquitted Shahab Uddin due to insufficient evidence to prove the allegations against him.
