Dhaka: The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has apprehended the truck driver responsible for the fatal accident that claimed the life of a female garment worker in the Banani area of the capital on Monday morning. The arrest was made after the incident where a truck ran over the workers, causing a public uproar.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a team from the Cyber and Special Crime unit of the DB, utilizing intelligence information and modern technology, successfully arrested the truck driver, identified as Md Titon Islam, 36, from the Kolatia area under Keraniganj upazila. Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations Department) of DMP, Md Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrest to the media today.
The tragic incident involved Minara Akhter, 19, a garment worker who was killed, and another worker, Sumaya Akhter, 19, who was injured when a fast-moving banana-laden truck lost control and struck them as they were crossing the road around 7 am in Banani on the previous day. This accident led to significant unrest among fellow garment workers.
In response to the accident, several hundred agitated garment workers erected barricades on the airport road, causing a prolonged traffic congestion until 1:30 pm. Commuters to and from the Uttara, Banani, and Mohakhali areas experienced significant delays and disruptions due to the blockade.
Law enforcement authorities have stated that lawful measures have been initiated against the arrested truck driver, ensuring that justice will be pursued following this unfortunate event.
