Dhaka: A court here today placed former senior secretary of the ICT ministry, NM Ziaul Alam, on a two-day remand in a case lodged under the cyber security act for allegedly selling citizens' national ID (NID) information. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after police produced him before the court and requested a 10-day remand.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, police arrested Alam from Chattogram city's Panchlaish area on March 5. The case was filed by one Shamimur Rahman with Kafrul Police Station on October 8, 2024.
The case documents reveal that the accused, Ziaul Alam, had given permission to Digicon Global Services Limited to use NID information for commercial purposes. The company, without ensuring the safety of the data, allegedly sold the information to 183 companies both domestically and internationally, leading to the embezzlement of approximately Taka 20 thousand crore.
