Dhaka: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk is set to present the United Nations human rights fact-finding report on the protests that occurred in Bangladesh during July and August 2024. The presentation will take place in Geneva tomorrow and will be available for live viewing on YouTube at 6pm Dhaka time.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the report addresses human rights violations and abuses related to the protests. The discussion will involve member states and civil society representatives, aiming to promote accountability, justice, and human rights reforms in Bangladesh. The interim government of Bangladesh, alongside civil society representatives from the country, will participate in the event.
On Monday, Volker Turk expressed hope that the independent fact-finding report will aid in truth-telling, accountability, reparations, healing, and reform in Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of ensuring due process in criminal cases and investigating violence, including incidents against minorities. While sharing a global update at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk remarked on the severe violence in Bangladesh last year, noting the government's harsh suppression of a student movement advocating for human rights.
He further stated that Bangladesh is now moving towards a new future, and their recent report on the severe human rights violations is a significant contribution to this journey.
