Dhaka: The National Independent Investigation Commission Chief Maj Gen (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman today announced that the commission may seek to interview former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India if granted permission. This initiative is part of the commission's efforts to reinvestigate the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles, now Border Guard Bangladesh) carnage that occurred on February 25-26, 2009.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman stated at a views-exchange meeting with the families of BDR mutiny martyrs at the Retired Armed Forces Officers Welfare Association (RAOWA) club that the investigation could involve traveling to India for this purpose. He emphasized the need for government approval to proceed with such an interrogation.
Rahman, who previously served as the Director General of the force, urged trust in the commission's work, highlighting its formation under the interim government. He called on the families affected by the BDR massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 74 individuals, including 57 army officers, to assist in gathering evidence, as much had been lost over the past 16 years during the Awami League's tenure.
The commission chief assured that the National Independent Investigation Commission will conduct an impartial investigation into the BDR massacre. He emphasized that the tasks of the investigation would proceed with fairness and collaboration from all parties involved.
The views-exchange meeting also provided an opportunity for family members of the victims, survivors of the Pilkhana carnage, and former army officers to engage in an open discussion.
