DHAKA: Recent reports on Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani, produced by Indian journalist Palki Sharma, published on the YouTube channel of Firstpost and news portal BDDiGEST are false and fabricated, the Chief Adviser's Press Wing stated today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the reports falsely claimed that Nasimul Ghani, a senior secretary, is a founder of the banned Islamist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir. Palki Sharma and BDDiGEST cited a 2008 report from The Daily Star titled 'Hizb ut-Tahrir leaders held over 'militancy' as their evidence. However, the press wing clarified in a statement on its verified Facebook page, CA Press Wing Facts, that Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani and Nasimul Gani mentioned in the Daily Star report are different individuals. The alleged Hizb ut-Tahrir leader, Nasim Gani, is actually a British citizen.
Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani is a prominent Bangladeshi bureaucrat and has served the country since joining its civil service in 1983. He is a Bangladeshi citizen with no dual nationality. His career includes a role as secretary to the then-Speaker of the Bangladesh national parliament and completing a top management training program at the University of Bradford in the UK in 2008.
The press wing emphasized that Hizb ut-Tahrir is an outlawed group in Bangladesh, and no government official is involved with this banned political outfit. Nasimul Ghani has never participated in any political party, even during his student years. The statement clarified that the reports linking him with Hizb ut-Tahrir are part of a disinformation campaign against Bangladesh by Indian news outlets and those associated with the ousted dictatorship of Sheikh Hasina.
In recent months, following the Interim Government's rise to power, several Hizb ut-Tahrir members have been arrested by Bangladesh police for illegal activities. The government maintains its stance against lifting the ban on the group.
