DHAKA: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated legal proceedings against former Chuadanga-2 MP Solaiman Haque Joarddar (Selun) and his wife, Akhtari Joarddar. The couple is accused of amassing wealth illegally and failing to disclose assets in their wealth statement submitted to the ACC.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Director General (Prevention) M Akhter Hossain of the ACC confirmed that two separate cases were filed against the Joarddars. The allegations suggest that Solaiman Haque Joarddar exploited his position as a former MP and Chuadanga District Awami League president to accumulate assets valued at approximately Tk 7.55 crore through corrupt practices, including bribery.
The case details further disclose that Solaiman engaged in money laundering by transferring about Tk 15.71 crore into various bank accounts, channeling the funds into diverse business ventures. These activities allegedly contravene several financial regulations.
In a parallel case, Akhtari Joarddar, aided by her husband, reportedly amassed undeclared assets worth Tk 4.05 crore through corrupt means. Similar to her husband, she is accused of money laundering by moving Tk 7.60 crore into different bank accounts and subsequently converting the funds into business investments.
The ACC's actions underscore its commitment to tackling corruption and financial misconduct at high levels, with the cases against the Joarddars highlighting significant issues of asset concealment and unlawful financial activities.
