Dhaka: A court in Dhaka has imposed a travel ban on Khandker Golam Faruque, the former commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and his wife, Sharmin Akter, in connection with graft allegations. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain, following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the travel embargo was sought by ACC Assistant Director Md Rakibul Hayat, who is investigating claims that the former DMP chief and his wife have accumulated illegal wealth amounting to Taka 3,000 crore and have laundered money overseas. The ACC's plea highlighted concerns that the couple might attempt to leave the country to evade prosecution, necessitating the travel restrictions to ensure their presence at trial.
The ACC's investigation into Faruque and Akter has intensified, focusing on the alleged illicit acquisition of assets and international money laundering. The court's decision to impose a travel ban underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing efforts by the ACC to hold accountable those suspected of corruption.
