Dhaka: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Baharul Alam, announced today that the police will refrain from arresting individuals without specific proof or reasonable grounds. “Police will not arrest anyone if there is a case or if there is a name in the case. If anyone thinks that he is not involved in any crime or incident, they should come directly to the police. The police will not arrest anyone without specific evidence or reasonable grounds. No innocent person will be harassed,” he stated at a press conference at the police headquarters.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Baharul Alam emphasized that numerous cases have emerged following the Anti-Discrimination Movement. “We will investigate the actual incident and submit a charge sheet or final report to the court,” he mentioned, assuring that arrests will only be made with valid reasons and thorough investigations. Addressing concerns about the morale of the police force, he shared plans to restore confidence and encourage proactive engage
ment with the public.

The IGP is set to visit every department of the police force starting next week to engage directly with officers. He highlighted the potential impact of the Police Reform Commission’s recommendations, expressing optimism that their implementation would transform the police into a more people-friendly institution.

The press conference was attended by senior police officials, including Additional IG (Administration) Md. Alamgir Alam, Additional IG (Crime and Operations) Md. Akram Hossain, and Additional IG (HR) Abu Naser Mohammad Khaled. During the conference, Dr Baharul Alam expressed condolences for those who lost their lives during the July-August uprising and sought forgiveness on behalf of the police.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by police members, commending their efforts and expressing sympathy for their families. Dr Baharul Alam also addressed instances of misconduct within the force, noting that some officers had acted unlawfully under the previous government’s directive
s. Despite these challenges, he assured that the operational activities of the Bangladesh police are gradually regaining momentum.

The IGP called for public support to overcome current challenges, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the police and the community. “It is difficult to overcome the current situation without the support and assistance of the people of the country,” he remarked, urging for collective efforts to build a renewed Bangladesh.
