Riyadh: Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed has emphasized the crucial role of women's leadership in achieving sustainable land management and maintaining the long-term health of ecosystems. She underscored that women's active participation is vital for combating desertification and enhancing climate resilience. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Ahmed's remarks were made during a high-level interactive dialogue of the gender caucus at the ongoing UNCCD COP16. The session, titled "HerLand: Women's Leadership on Sustainable Land Management," highlighted Bangladesh's dedication to empowering women through innovative policies and grassroots initiatives, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change. The event, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focused on the significant impact women have in promoting sustainable land management practices globally. Dr. Ahmed stressed the need for integrating gender perspectives into policy frameworks and decision-making processes. She pointed out that involving women in land management not only ensures equitable development but also promotes community-based solutions to environmental challenges. The environment secretary noted Bangladesh's remarkable achievements in land management, such as increased forest coverage and the restoration of degraded land via community-driven projects led by women. She highlighted the government's strategic focus on enhancing women's leadership across all decision-making levels in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15. Dr. Ahmed shared success stories from Bangladesh, including community-driven afforestation projects led by women in coastal areas, which have significantly improved local livelihoods and ecosystem health. The session convened policymakers, experts, and activists from around the world to discuss strategies for strengthening women's leadership in tackling land degradation and desertification.
