Dhaka: A court here today handed down life imprisonment sentences to five individuals implicated in the gruesome 2008 case of gouging out a businessman's eyes in the capital's Demra area. The court's verdict marks the culmination of a long-standing legal battle, providing a sense of justice for the victim and his family. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Dhaka 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Sheikh Samidul Islam, delivered the judgment. Alongside the life sentences, each of the five convicts-Bijoy alias Shamim Ahammed, Dwin Islam, Md Iqbal, Nasu alias Naser Uddin, and Rajib-was fined 10,000, with an additional three-month imprisonment in case of default on the payment. The court also acquitted four other individuals who had been charged in connection with the case. The case documents reveal the harrowing details of the crime, which occurred on the night of November 27, 2008. Rajibul Alam, the victim, was returning home via a rickshaw from the Demra Board Mill area when the convicts i ntercepted him. They forcibly dragged him to a vacant plot, where they restrained his hands and legs and struck his head with a brick. In a brutal act, both of his eyes were gouged out with a sharp weapon. The following day, Rajibul's father, Shah Alam, filed an attempt to murder case at Demra Police Station, setting in motion the legal proceedings that led to today's judgment.
