Gangachara: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has emphasized the need to increase fish sanctuaries to enhance fish production, addressing a rally at Kochua Bazar in Gangachara upazila. She highlighted the importance of indigenous fish in the diet to meet the nutritional needs of the population and build a healthy and talented nation. The event was organized by the Gangachara upazila administration, the Teesta River Protection Committee, and the Marginal Farmers' and Fishermen Samity. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the rally was chaired by Gangachara Upazila Executive Officer Nahid Tamanna and attended by hundreds of local fishermen, marginal farmers, and journalists. Special guests included Faridul Islam Farid, President of the Teesta River Protection Committee; Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Director of Rangpur Divisional Livestock Office; and Md Saifuddin Yahiya, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries for Rangpur. In her address, Adviser Akhter noted the ongoing efforts of the Banglade sh Fisheries Research Institute to boost fish production and meet the country's protein and nutritional demands. She advised fishermen to temporarily halt fishing activities, assuring them of government support during such periods. She also stressed the need for collective action beyond district administration efforts to eliminate illegal fishing practices for sustainable fish production growth.
