Dhaka: A Special Judge Court here today acquitted BNP central leader Mir Sarafat Ali from a case filed under the subversive act with the city's New Market police station. Md Ali Ahsan, Judge of the Special Court No-9, acquitted BNP's Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali after hearing an appeal submitted by the lawyer of the accused. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ataullah, Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, on November 20, 2023, sentenced Sarafat Ali to one-and-a-half years in prison in a case filed under various sections of the subversive act. Sarafat Ali filed an appeal against the judgment with the Special Judge Court-9. The case, filed by Khalilur Rahman, an Assistant Sub-Inspector of New Market police station, accused 13 leaders and workers of BNP on January 29, 2015, for their alleged involvement in creating panic near New Market gate number-4 by exploding explosives. Police submitted a charge sheet on July 21, 2014, accusing 14 leaders and workers of BNP, including BNP Joint Secretar y General Habibunnanbi Khan Sohel, Mir Sarafat Ali, and Azizul Bari Helal. The court framed charges against the 14 BNP leaders on March 15, 2021, taking the allegations into consideration. The recent acquittal of Mir Sarafat Ali marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the case.
