Dhaka: Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain expressed optimism today about the imminent commencement of direct ship operations between Bangladesh and the Maldives. This development is anticipated to enhance bilateral trade by facilitating import-export activities, as highlighted during a meeting with Maldives High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Shiuneen Rasheed, at the ministry office, according to an official release. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Maldives High Commissioner affirmed that plans to initiate direct shipping services between the two nations would be implemented shortly. The envisioned direct ship operation is expected to bolster tourism by enhancing bilateral communications, a prospect the envoy welcomed. Maldivian traders have shown a positive attitude towards improving shipping communication, with potential cruise services being discussed alongside traditional container and cargo transportation. The shipping adviser emphasized the longsta nding friendly relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives, noting the geopolitical significance and maritime wealth of both South Asian countries. He stated that the Maldives imports various goods from Bangladesh, including textiles, fruits, and vegetables. Additionally, over one lakh Bangladeshi migrants are employed in the Maldives across diverse sectors such as construction, tourism, and health, earning a reputable standing. Brig Gen Hussain also invited the Maldivian envoy to consider sending cadets for training at Bangladesh's Marine Academies, which offer internationally accredited marine affairs programs. High Commissioner Rasheed welcomed the proposal, expressing interest in a collaborative education and training exchange program between the two countries. She also mentioned the longstanding interest of Maldivian traders in utilizing Bangladesh for transshipment purposes, suggesting further discussions at an expert level. Furthermore, the adviser announced Bangladesh's intention to contest in the upcoming 2025 elections for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under c-category and sought support from the Maldives. Senior officials, including Senior Shipping Secretary Mohammad Yousuf and Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bidosh Chandra Barman, attended the meeting.
