Dhaka: Dhaka and Oslo today expressed satisfaction over the shift of Bangladesh-Norway relations from development cooperation to a trade-centric partnership. This was observed when newly appointed Norwegian ambassador to Bangladesh, Hakon Arald Gulbransen, paid a maiden call on Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry here today, said a press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, the Ambassador noted that Norway sees great potential in Bangladesh, with its substantial consumer base, as a key market for trade and investment. The foreign secretary expressed gratitude to Norway for its support, especially in areas such as renewable energy, shipbuilding, and ship recycling.
The meeting covered several key areas of cooperation, including trade and investment, the Interim Government’s priorities, Rohingya issues, and climate change. The Foreign Secretary highlighted the Interim Government’s reform initiatives and sought cooperation for technical expertise, experie
nce sharing, and support for the treatment and rehabilitation of students injured during the mass uprising in July-August.
The Ambassador expressed support for these reform initiatives and committed to exploring broad areas where Norway could assist. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to work together for enhanced bilateral relations.
The Norwegian Ambassador appreciated Bangladesh’s efforts in hosting the Rohingyas and reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to extend humanitarian assistance. The Foreign Secretary thanked Norway for their assistance to the Rohingyas and highlighted the negative impacts on the host community. He sought support from the international community, including Norway, for a safe and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
