Khulna: Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday demanded the launch of a crash programme to combat the rising prevalence of dengue fever, asserting that the city has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The BNP leaders emphasized the urgent need for the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) to act swiftly, as the increasing mosquito infestation has severely affected the lives of city residents.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BNP officials including Central Information Affair Secretary Azizul Bari Helal, Student Affair Secretary Rakibul Islam Bakul, City Unit Convener Shafiqul Alam Mona, and General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin issued a statement urging immediate action. Mizanur Rahman, Convener of the BNP Media cell, released a press statement highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The BNP leaders criticized the previous KCC administration, led by former Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, and some corrupt waste management department employees for failing to maintain cleanliness o
f the city’s canals and drains. This negligence, they argued, has led to the proliferation of mosquitoes and a subsequent rise in dengue cases.

The Department of Health has reported that dengue fever has claimed 15 lives and infected 2,626 people in Khulna this year, underscoring the urgent need for intervention. The BNP leaders have called on the KCC to address the issue promptly to prevent further health crises.
