Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today paid deep respect to the memory of Shaheed Noor Hossain on the occasion of Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, observed annually to honor a pivotal figure in the anti-dictatorship movement. In a heartfelt message, Rahman expressed his reverence for Noor Hossain, acknowledging his sacrifice for democracy and praying for his eternal peace. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Noor Hossain became a symbol of resistance and courage when he participated in an anti-autocracy demonstration on November 10, 1987. During the protest, he boldly displayed the slogans "Free democracy" and "Down with autocracy" on his bare chest and back. His life was tragically cut short when he was shot by police forces supporting the dictatorial regime. Tarique Rahman emphasized Noor Hossain's enduring impact on the democratic movement in Bangladesh. He described Noor as an unforgettable figure whose call for democracy was silenced by the oppressive forces of th e time. Rahman asserted that Noor's contributions to the country were not in vain, as his martyrdom fueled the eventual downfall of the dictatorship. Rahman further remarked that the attempts to quell the anti-dictatorship movement by killing Noor Hossain ultimately failed. The mass uprising in late 1990 led to the resignation of the dictatorial regime, marking a significant victory for democracy in Bangladesh, achieved through Noor Hossain's sacrifice.
