New York: Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith has been elected as a member of the prestigious International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) in a heavily contested election held on Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, there were three candidates from Bangladesh, China, and the Republic of Korea vying for two vacant seats from the Asia-Pacific region. The candidates from Bangladesh and China emerged victorious in the election, as confirmed by a press release received today. Ambassador Muhith expressed that his election is a testament to the trust and confidence that UN member states have in Bangladesh 2.0 under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. It also signifies recognition of Bangladesh's active role and contribution to the United Nations. Ambassador Muhith will serve as a member of the ICSC for a 4-year term from 2025 to 2028. The ICSC is an independent expert body establish ed by the United Nations General Assembly, composed of fifteen members. It is primarily responsible for making decisions and recommendations regarding the management, compensation, and entitlements of the United Nations' human resources. Ambassador Muhith, a career diplomat, has been serving as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN since July 2022. He is currently the Chair of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) of the UNGA and will also serve as the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS in 2024. His previous roles include Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022, Vice-chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2023, President of the Executive Board of UN-Women, and Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
