DHAKA: The European Union is poised to extend robust support to Bangladesh's Interim Government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, in its reform initiatives and battle against corruption. This commitment was conveyed by Paola Pampaloni, Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the European External Action Service, during her meeting with the Chief Adviser at his Tejgaon office. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Pampaloni emphasized the readiness of European countries to back Bangladesh, expressing the support of all 27 EU member states. "The message is very clear. The European Union is with you. We want to support your reform," she assured. There will be no shortage of funds or technical support for the interim government to accomplish its objectives. The Chief Adviser acknowledged this gesture, reflecting on his discussions with European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen at the United Nations General Assembly in September. They explored avenues for EU support in combating corruption and transitioning towards renewable energy, drawing from the EU's extensive experience. Pampaloni noted that the EU had successfully assisted other countries with its technical expertise and financial aid. "We were listening to your statements in UNGA carefully and resolved that now we have someone who can be worked with in Bangladesh. You don't need to feel alone. We are really keen to support," she added. EU officials encouraged Bangladesh to create more investment opportunities, which would foster job creation and enhance trade. Ambassador Michael Miller informed the Chief Adviser about the planned visit of the European Investment Bank's Vice President to Bangladesh in January to explore business prospects. The Chief Adviser reassured the EU representatives of Bangladesh's dedication to labor rights reform, a move expected to attract more investment. "We want to make sure we keep the international standard... there will be no hide and seek. We don't want to play this game anymore," he asserte d. EU officials commended Professor Yunus's political commitment to reforms across various sectors. "This is for the first time we have seen some political commitment on something that we have set in. So, we count on you," Pampaloni remarked. The Chief Adviser also urged the EU to collaborate with Nepal and India to enhance regional power connectivity, emphasizing Nepal's untapped hydropower potential. He called on the EU to focus on Bangladeshi youths, highlighting the recent successes of Bangladeshi girls in South Asian football. He also requested the EU to send a European soccer team to inspire these young athletes.
